Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which stops bacterial growth. Common indications include respiratory tract infections (such as community-acquired pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis), ear and throat infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections, notably Chlamydia trachomatis. It is also used for traveler’s diarrhea and some atypical infections caused by organisms like Mycoplasma and Legionella.
Azithromycin is favored for its convenient dosing (often once daily for 3–5 days) and good tissue penetration. It can be taken with or without food, though gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may occur. Less common but serious risks include QT interval prolongation and potential cardiac arrhythmias, especially in patients with existing heart disease or electrolyte imbalances.
It is ineffective against viral infections, and inappropriate use can contribute to antibiotic resistance. Azithromycin should be used only when prescribed and completed as directed, even if symptoms improve early.
