Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, which stops bacterial growth. Common indications include respiratory tract infections (such as community-acquired pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis), ear and throat infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted infections, notably Chlamydia trachomatis.
